About M1 Fiber CommunicationsMichigan owned. Michigan operated. Michigan proud.
Our Story
M1 Fiber Communications was founded in 1998 by a group of Michigan telecommunications engineers who saw an opportunity: while the big national providers were focused on major metropolitan markets, the communities of Oakland County were being left behind on aging copper infrastructure.
Our name is a tribute to M-1 — Woodward Avenue — Michigan's first paved highway and the historic spine that connects Detroit through Oakland County all the way to Pontiac. Just as Woodward Avenue brought commerce and community together, M1 Fiber brings world-class connectivity to the neighborhoods and businesses along the corridor.
Starting with a single fiber hut in Pontiac and a handful of fixed wireless towers, M1 Fiber has grown to serve over 12,000 residential and 800 business customers across Oakland County. We remain proudly independent — no out-of-state ownership, no venture capital overlords, no scripts read from a call center in another time zone.
Our Mission
To deliver carrier-grade internet connectivity to every home and business in northwest Oakland County, supported by local people who live in the communities they serve, at a fair price with no hidden fees — ever.
Why Choose M1 Fiber?
▸ Local Support, Local People
When you call M1 Fiber, you talk to someone in Pontiac — not a call center in another country.
Our support team lives in Rochester, Clarkston, and Lake Orion.
▸ Always-On Connectivity
No dial-up. No busy signals. No "your connection has been idle" disconnects. Just pure,
always-on broadband, monitored 24/7 from our Network Operations Center.
▸ Carrier-Grade Infrastructure
We own and operate our own fiber backbone. No reselling another provider's network.
When you're on M1 Fiber, you're on our glass, end to end.
▸ Community Investment
We live here too. M1 Fiber sponsors local little league teams, provides free connectivity
to Oakland County public libraries, and partners with Oakland Schools for student internet
access programs.
The Huron River Valley Partnership
In 2001, M1 Fiber entered into a landmark infrastructure agreement with the Huron River Valley Authority (HRVA), granting us right-of-way access along 47 miles of the Huron River corridor. This partnership enables our new fiber backbone connecting Pontiac to Ann Arbor, dramatically increasing capacity for all Oakland County subscribers. Read more »
